Guidance - sheet 6 (Materials & components)
On this sheet you need to develop (experiment with) your design in terms of:
You can also make models out of paper and card. Photos of these models can be included on this sheet.
On this sheet you need to develop (experiment with) your design in terms of:
- The materials which could be used for the different parts (components) of the product. Show your design with the different materials (at least two alternatives). Add notes to name the different materials and any effects (good and bad) this could have on the product. Materials which you could consider include:
- softwood (e.g. pine) which is available in a range of sizes (ask your teacher to find out what is available), but is not suitable for laser cutting.
- manufactured board (e.g. medium density fibreboard - MDF, plywood) available in 3mm and 6mm thickness ready for laser cutting.
- polymer (e.g. acrylic) available in many colours (as well as clear), mostly in 1mm, 2mm and 5mm thickness and can be laser cut.
- metal (e.g. aluminium, steel, copper, brass) available in sheet, tube and bar, but not suitable for laser cutting. - The components (e.g. switches, hinges, LEDs, buzzers, battery holders). Show alternative types of component and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each. See components page.
You can also make models out of paper and card. Photos of these models can be included on this sheet.
