Sheet 3: Analysis of existing products

It is very important to thoroughly look at the products which are already available which attempt to solve the type of problem/s you are focussing on.  You need to avoid duplicating a solution which already exists, but you also need to use existing products to help you design a more effective solution.

You need to analyse at least six different products (or products related in some way to the Design Brief).  For each you must include a clear photograph of the product.  Also, you could include analysis of:
  • What is the primary function of the product?  Are there any secondary functions?  You should comment on how the product attempts to achieve this function.
  • Who is the most likely customer of the product? Comment on age, gender, any other relevant characteristics).
  • What is the cost of the product?  Comment on why you think the product has been priced at this point.
  • What is the approximate size / weight of the product? Comment on the factors which you think have led to the product being this size / weight).
  • Comment on the product’s aesthetics.  Explain why you think is looks the way it does (shape, colour, finish).
  • Which materials have been used in the construction of the product?  Comment on any important and relevant properties of the materials used.
  • Are there any safety features? Comment on why you think these safety features have been included in the design.
  • Has the designed and manufacturer of the product considered the environment? Have sustainable or recycled materials been used? Can the product be easily recycled (by separating different materials used)?

*Remember to make your sheet look good too. You can use:
